Rainy Adventures at Legoland, Disneyland, and San Diego Museums

February 12th, 2009 by bsmith | 2 Comments | Filed in Legoland, theme parks

The four day weekend looms ahead for many parents.  Here in San Diego there is rain in the forecast.  Not good news for the Mom of three active kids.  We will probably spend alot of time at home at play,  but will also make some time for adventure.

Tommorrow I will be using our Southern California pass to take Jared and Justin to Disneyland. (Destiny has opted to stay with Grandma.)  It may be sprinkling a bit, but we’ll be putting on our rain clothes, packing a lunch, and braving the sprinkles.  Justin and I headed to Disneyland on a rainy day last month for semester break.  I learned a few things: it pays to come prepared (rain ponchos are $8),  make sure you hit the rides as soon as the rain clears, and expect some of the rides and activities to be closed.  If you willing to be soggy,  a rainy day at Disneyland is less crowded fun.

Legoland can also be a source of rainy day adventure.  If you venture out, go left as you enter the park.  You can enjoy the Build and Test, manipulate, a mindstorm, or try out the latest Lego video game.  The Duplo building area is a fun place to wait out a storm with the little ones.  You can also catch the latest Lego musical or a 3-D movie.  See my guidebook for more Legoland rainy day ideas.

Another item on my “may do” list is head to a San Diego Museum.  It’s museum month here in San Diego.  Stop by your local Macy’s and pick up a San Diego Museum good for half off admission to many local museums.  I’m hoping to get to the Children’s Museum by the end of the month.  Check out the museum month website for more information http://www.sandiegomuseumcouncil.org/museum-month/.

Disneyland Destroys Small World and SD Zoo Bans Food for Hungry Toddlers

February 5th, 2009 by bsmith | 5 Comments | Filed in theme parks, Uncategorized

Sorry for the headline.  I am feeling a little bit melodramatic today!  I have decided to blog less to concentrate on my business ventures for a while, but couldn’t stay silent about two articles I read today in the Union Tribune.  As a mom, Small World Fan, and theme park lover I had to weigh in on thse important changes to two of my favorite attractions.

Apparently the “renovation” of the Small World ride has resulted in its “Disneyfication”.  Disney characters  (think, Arial, Stitch, and Alladin) can now be found strategically placed throughout the Small World ride.  The music has even been altered to reflect Disney movie soundtracks.  Some may consider me a “Disneyland Purist” who is behind the times, but this is completely unacceptable.  The Small World Ride was a beautiful albeit stereotypical celebration of all the world’s cultures.  It seems disrespectful to alter it by injecting the Disney brand through what essentially amounts to “product placement.”  It was a fantastical version of reality-everyone happy and harmonious, and that is what I loved about it.  It makes me cry every time I sail through.  Disney claims that is implementing these steps to appeal to a broader demographic.  I would say that the ride is packed every time we go, and it attracts riders with its history and charm.  What makes Disneyland special is that some of the best “historic” rides have stayed the same.  What’s next, Tarzan visits the Tiki Lounge?

Further south ,the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park has banned outside food.  This is not a new concept, most themeparks have a policy in place.  It will remain to be seen who strictly it will be enforced.  So far I haven’t found a theme park that make you throw away outside food as you enter.  I had heard Disneyland once had stricter policies, but now they do not stop you from bringing a picnic.  Legoland seems to be the same way, thank goodness.  I’ve heard that Sea World is also somewhat lax about this.  The Zoo folks said that people’s coolers were getting in the way during busy summer months.  If so I think it would be more prudent to ban coolers.  In this economy you are not going to get many new passholders if you don’t let them bring their own food.  Most of us can not afford to spend $30 or more to feed our family every time we head to the zoo.

I was considering purchasing a zoo membership this year, but am now rethinking this.  Zoo food is yucky and overpriced.  We will not be visiting  very often if we can’t pack a few snacks to keep the grouchies away.  A picnic area outside works for the big folks, but we all know those preschoolers need to eat, when they need to eat.  They’re not always up to a trek out the gate.

On a more postive note,  a Harlem Globe Trotter will be visiting Legoland on February 6th between 4 and 5 pm.  Hopefully he will show off some moves.  Legoland Members get discounts to the Harlem Globe Trotters Show here in San Diego as well as to the Wild Ocean IMAX Movie at the Ruben Fleet Science Museum.    I love Legoland’s cross promotions, don’t you?

Well so long for a while my friends.  I’ll miss you and try to start up again as soon as I can.

Happy Trails,

Bridget

Free Admission to Sea Life Aquarium for Public Safety Personnel 1/25/09

January 24th, 2009 by bsmith | 1 Comment | Filed in Legoland

Wow! Almost let this one slip by me.  In honor of  The National Day of Service  The Sea Life Aquarium is offering up to four free admissions for public safety personnel.  This promotion ends Sunday January 25th.

If you are a  police officer, firefighter, emergency response personnel, military police officer, federal agent, Homeland Security official or INS official download a coupon from the following website http://www.sealifeus.com/whats-new_2009_01_16 and head on over with your family.

As a San Diego resident, I want to give a special shout out to our firefighters.  Last year was a tough one and they should be proud of what they accomplished here in San Diego and throughout California.  Thanks for keeping our homes and families safe!

Kudos to the Sea Life Aquarium  and Legoland California for this amazing promotion.  What a great idea,

Gather Ye Lego Bricks While Ye May!

January 5th, 2009 by bsmith | 2 Comments | Filed in Legoland, San Diego Day Trips

The 2009 Junior Master Model Builder Competition holds its January competition next weekend.  We tried this activity out this summer and it was very fun.  Kids meet in the Imagination Zone and construct a thematic model using the bricks and baseplate provided.  They don’t have the January 2009 theme up..bummer.  It would still be a good idea to have your little one start planning his or her building strategy.

Have kids from multiple age groups? Want to join in the fun yourself?  Good news!  There are several different age groups in the competition.  You and your family can enter in 9 and under, 10 -15, and 16+ (adults are welcome…but you will have to beat out those teenage Lego geeks.  They do high quality work.)  If you are heading to Legoland with big kids, next weekend would be a good time to do it.

The competition is open from 10 am to two hours prior to park closing.  The models are judged the following week by a real Legoland Master Model Builder and the winner in each age category wins four Legoland admissions and gets to advance to the big buildoff on January 9, 2010.    Even if your child doesn’t win, his or her work may be displayed in the cabinets in the Imagination Zone.  Good for bragging rights if you get to revisit with friends.

Legoland Report

December 22nd, 2008 by bsmith | 1 Comment | Filed in Legoland

A soggy hello from Carlsbad, California!  Needless to say this would not be a great day to head to Legoland.  (If you find yourself in Carlsbad however it may be a great day to visit the newly re-opened Sea Life Aquarium…good timing model citizens :) .

My three part adventure was not to be.  This holiday season has been somewhat hectic, and I didn’t have three days plus childcare to make it happen.  Thanks to my gracious friend Ellen who sponsored three of our family members as her guest, we had a great family day at Legoland yesterday.

It was clear, cold and a little sunny.  We had fun taking a picture with a lego Santa and sleigh.  There is also a beautiful massive lego Christmas tree (30 feet tall commprised of more than 245,00 blocks and some more subtle holiday decorations around the park. They even had some elves giving out lego bricks  I would have appreciated a few more decorations.   It didn’t have a holiday feeling throughout the park like Disneyland this time of year. According to Ellen however the FBI is checking out Santa on the roof of the White House.  Those Lego builders have sense of humor!

Still, our visit reminded me that I enjoy the smaller scale of this park especially for the little ones.  It was so much less frentic than our Disneyland visit.  In general, the lines were short which was appreciated.  If you are planning a San Diego, keep an eye on the weather report.  Carlsbad seems to be alternating between stormy and clear days.

The new additions to the Sea Life aquarium are:

* New tiger sharks and rays in the Atlantis exhibit

* A new slide in the Lake Tahoe area

*An interactive lego sand castle

*New Murals at the front entrance.

There is also a lego Christmas Tree in the Ocean tank to give the aquarium a holiday touch.

If you are heading to Legoland this holiday season, be aware there are extended hours later in the week.  Legoland at night is very fun and often less crowded so take advantage.  If we all still had passes you would find us at the kids New Year’s Eve celebration.  So nice to have a kid friendly way to welcome the new year!

There is a nice little red and green firework celebration at closing each night.

If you are heading to Legoland please check out my Unauthorized Guide to Legoland California availiable on LULU.com

Happy Holidays!

Check out the Legoland Holiday Block Party Dec 20-31st!

December 2nd, 2008 by bsmith | No Comments | Filed in Legoland, Uncategorized

Going to be in San Diego for the holidays?   The Legoland Holiday Block Party can be a really fun activity.  The park is adorned with tiny minature Santas.  Miniland locations like New York and New Orleans are decked out in their festive best.  You can even pose with a life size Lego model of old St. Nick!

The Legoland shops are a great place to find Holiday treasures.  Use your Membership Plus, Ambassador, or Resort membership to get great discounts on Lego toys and souvenirs.  You can get a “shopping pass” or  visit one hour before closing in order to shop without paying admission.  Contact Legoland or see my guidebook for details.

On the subject of discounts, Pass holders received guest coupons by mail in October. One guest per passholder is admitted.  This is the time to use them because they expire December 25th.  Since the Costco three month passes for the rest of the family have expired, I plan to take each kid on a special mom and kid Legoland date before Christmas.  Stay tuned for my three part series: Legoland with an adventurous four year old, Legoland with a timid four year old, and Legoland with an active nine year old.

We visited Legoland on Christmas Day last year.  The crowds were minimal and we had a lot of fun.  Be prepared for more meltdowns than usual due to tiredness and too many holiday treats.  We had some doozies with Jared.

Stay tuned for more info about post Christmas Legoland celebrations.

If you are a Legoland fan, passholder, or future tourist, please consider buying my guidebook The Unauthorized Legoland Guidebook.  It also makes a great Christmas present!

Sea Life Aquarium Closed for Modifications

November 13th, 2008 by bsmith | No Comments | Filed in Legoland, Uncategorized

The Sea Life Aquarium at Legoland California will be closed for modifications from November 11, 2008-December 26, 2008.  A Legoland press release says that the modications will include, ” adding an interactive Lego sand castle building area; enhancing the Lego animation in the Lost City of Atlantis display; adding decor to the Lake Tahoe area; remodeling the fron and Park-side Sea Life entrances; and improvements to the interactive audio/visual techologies currently being used throughout the aquarium.”

I am excited that they are remodeling the entrances and hope that this will include eliminating the little scary dark room that you are forced to stand in to listen to the orientation talk before entering the aquarium.    The new Lego Sand Castle building area sounds great.  This aquarium was in need of some fun hands on activities.

I am disappointed that it doesn’t sound like they have plans to alter the access to the touch pools.  I would really appreciate having my preschoolers be able to touch the creatures in the touch pools without having to do heavy lifting!  Well…maybe next year.

On another note,  we have had some beautiful weather here in Carlsbad this Fall.  Keep an eye on the weather report.  We may have some nice warm days to visit Legoland over Thanksgiving break.

Happy Trails,

Bridget

Legoland is Spooktacular on Saturday Nights in October!

Destiny and Justin Show off the Headless Pumpkin

Destiny and Justin Show off the Headless Pumpkin

The kids and I had a blast at Legoland tonight!  It was crowded, but since we stayed until closing we were able to have the rides all to ourselves at the end of the night.  For those who are curious, if you come during the day you do not need to exit the park and then re-enter.  You do need  to come to the front of the park and pick up a wristband for the night time festivities.

Castle Hill is alive with music and stilt walkers.  The Rides in Land of Adventure were also open.  Jared tried Knights Tournament for the first time.  The kids enjoyed the Brick or Treat Trail and collected an assortment of doodads and unhealthy goodies.  Justin made friends with fellow Clone Troopers at the Hideaways and they captured the fortress.  We opted out of the costume contest since we were dressed in rather generic costumes, and I’m somewhat glad we did.   The lines didn’t seem worth the goodie bags.  During the contest we built Lego pumpkins and received some great balloon creations.

The party was a very fun way to enjoy Legoland, but I don’t think I’d recommend attending the night time party alone since your access to the park is limited and the price is steep.  If you purchase a regular admission on a Saturday in October you can get added value from your entrance by enjoying the night time party.  If you are a member make sure you use your coupon and enjoy the party!

Swept Away by Wild Rivers

September 29th, 2008 by bsmith | 2 Comments | Filed in theme parks

Only in Southern California can you celebrate the last days of summer in late September!  This Saturday we used our free Legoland pass to visit the Wild Rivers Water Park in Irvine California.  It was closing weekend for the park.  The weather was perfect…warm without being too hot.  The crowds were very manageable. Everyone else was busy with soccer practice I suppose.  I am so glad we set aside time for this final summer fling!

Wild Rivers is a really fun park.  The Explorer’s Island has a lazy river and smale scale water slides that were just like the “big kid” water slides.  Tucked in the back of this area close to the Chaos water slide was a fun sprinkler area where the kids control the amount of squirt using levers.  It was great for little and big kids who love to get wet.  My best memory of the entire day will be Destiny, age 4 swimming around the lazy river twice wearing her life jacket!

Wild Rivers Mountain is the big kid’s slide area.  They have a great assortment of exciting water slides.  My favorite was the “old school” water ride entitled the Cobra.  Justin, age 9 and my husband Ken also had a blast trying out the slides.

Another great area for the whole family was Thunder Cove.  Justin loved intertubing in the wave pool at Monsoon Lagoon.  Jared, age 3 and Destiny, age 4 body surfed and played on the Dinosaur Slide.

The coolest feature of the park were these special bracelets you could put on the kids that allowed you to locate them if they got separated from you.  We got one for Destiny and Jared, but in the future I would get one for Justin and Ken as well.  It would make reuniting after a ride much easier.  You could even leave your party mail!  The bracelet doubled as your credit card while in the park, and anything you spent was deducted from the total.  A great system.  We took advantage of both features.

This summer Legoland Passmembers got one free admission to Wild Rivers.  The staff didn’t scan our card or take down any info, so you may be able to visit more than once.  Let me know if anyone pulled that off.

The Wild Rivers admission certainly adds value to the Legoland Membership.  Make sure you take advantage of it!

Happy Trails,

Bridget

Brick or Treat Party Nights Are Here!

Kitty Cat Destiny enjoys a Halloween Trip to Legoland, Ca

Kitty Cat Destiny enjoys a Halloween Trip to Legoland, Ca

I got my member newsletter in the mail from Legoland last week.  Those are the best because they always contain bring a friend coupons and other great discounts.  This year, we receive free admission for the Brick or Treat Party Nights since we are pass members and could bring a friend for an additional $25 which would include an all day Legoland admission.  (Make friends with a Legoland pass holder today!)

Last year we tried the Brick or Treat Trail.  It was really fun.  I liked that they included lego bricks and organic apples with their Wonka Candy.  The contribution to the annual sugar rush was limited.  This year I think we will use our free coupon and attend the night time brick or treat celebration next weekend.  We need to get there before our passes run out.  You might want to think about having the kids come in costume.  I read on line today about someone who actually won the costume contest and got free tickets to return to Legoland.  I’ll try and post after our adventure and let you know if the night time activities are really worth it.  I love Legoland at night, so I think at least I’ll have fun.

Don’t  throw away that member newsletter.  It also includes 4 bring a friend free coupons good from November 1st-December 25th.  I plan to use these to take the kids on some special mommy dates come Christmas time.  If you will be purchasing Legos this Christmas it also has a 20% off coupon good for purchases made at Legoland in early December.

Well, better figure out what we’re wearing next weekend.

Happy Trails,

Bridget
