Beach Cleanup, South Carlsbad State Beach, Carlsbad, Ca

Dear Readers,

Let me introduce you to my soul place here in Carlsbad.  South Carlsbad State Beach is the site of many wonderful family memories. This is where Justin learned to boogie board, and Ken learned to surf.  When we first arrived at this beach three years ago, Destiny was too timid to get anywhere near the water.  Now, on a good day, she’ll splash and be dragged along on a boogie board.

It’s where we bring our dear friends from Santa Cruz when they come to visit.  All the Northern California folk savor the warm water.  We break out the boogie boards and teach the kids to ride the waves.

On summer evenings our family heads down to the South Carlsbad State Beach to picnic and watch the sunset.  Every anniversary Ken and I head to the beach for burritos and boogie boarding until the sun goes down.

This beach is special to our family.  It is our beach and we care for it by packing our own trash and sometimes other people’s.  Twice a year we join our fellow Cub Scouts in a huge beach cleanup.  Happily so many people treasure this beach, that there is usually not much trash to find.

All this may be changing at the end of the summer.  Due to budget cuts, South Carlsbad and many other state beaches and state parks are on a closure list .  Such closures be devastating on a personal level for the citizens of Carlsbad and other local communities.  It will also have a significant impact on tourism.  According to a  recent Sacramento State study California State Parks generates $300 million dollars in California sales tax for “park related expenditures”.

The budget crisis is very grave here in California.  The Governor and Legislature have tough decisions to make that will have a significant impact on health, human services, and education.  Although State Parks are very important to me and my family, I feel somewhat guilty advocating for them, when there is so much need elsewhere.  Recently , however, I read a great idea from the  California State Parks Foundation that would free up some money in the budget, keep the parks open, and even promote in state tourism.  Last spring, in the midst of the last round of budget battles the foundation proposed the implementation of a California State Access Pass  program.  In exchange for a $10 fee on the California vehicle tax, all vehicles with valid California license plates would receive free admission  and parking at most California State Parks.  The fee would raise $282 million for the State Parks and the current allocation for the parks in the budget would be returned to the General Fund for the next four years in order to assist the State of California in resolving other budget concerns.

What can we do to avert this crisis?

Here are some steps that I have taken so far:

  • Signed the California State Parks Foundation Petition .
  • Joined the California States Parks Foundation Facebook Group as well as my friend Jade’s  Facebook Group Families for California State Parks.
  • E-mailed my City Council to express my concern regarding this issue and educate them about the California State Park Access Pass proposal.
  • Planned  to participate in Save Our State Parks Weekend.  We will head to Carlsbad State Beach on or before the weekend of June 20th and take pictures/ film a Flip video of my family holding the Save Our State Parks sign.   I’ll upload the pictures to the CSPF as well as my blog.

I am also starting a regular feature on my blog to raise awareness entitled State Park Sundays.  Every Sunday I hope to feature a profile of a different California State Park.  It’s a big project and I would love some help.  Spread the word about State Park Sundays.  I also welcome guest blogs about your favorite California State Park.  Let’s make sure that Californians appreciate the treasure that they have before its gone.

Thanks for your patience with my very word intensive Photo Friday Post.  For more Photo Friday Fun check in with my friend Delicious Baby.

An Unforgettable Evening at the San Diego Zoo Elephant Odyssey

My New Elephant Friend, San Diego Zoo

My New Elephant Friend, San Diego Zoo

Last Friday evening my family and I had the chance to attend the Elephant Odyssey VIP party at the San Diego Zoo on behalf of Family Adventure Guidebooks.  Justin, my oldest, loved being a VIP. He  showed everyone my badge announcing “We’re VIPs!” at every opportunity.  Very embarrassing!  We all had a great time.  The food was  delicious.  The kids got airbrush tattoos and rode home cuddling the soft woolly mammoths that we discovered in the elegant swag bags.  The kids also enjoyed some close animal encounters.

One of the most interesting parts of our visit was the opportunity to explore the Conrad Prebys Elephant Management Facility that is located in the center of the exhibit.  I have read that there has been some controversy about whether zoological institutions  can care for elephants in captivity, but I must say that this structure was pretty comprehensive.  The bottom was like a huge open air barn.  The elephants respond to their keeper’s call, and come in for check ups, husbandry, and training.  When the elephants are not in the care center, it is sealed off so visitors can get a closer look.  My four year old Jared and I enjoyed peeking into the laundry room and seeing the zoo keeper’s boots.

Another hi-light came as I went in search of the zoo’s PR person.  I walked back towards the entrance to the exhibit and came upon a tired preschooler running back and forth in front of the glass jaguar enclosure.  The playful jaguar on the other side of the glass joined his new found little friend in doing laps.  It was an amazing sight.  If you have the opportunity to make it to Night Zoo this summer, it is worth a visit.  Many of the animals were more active  and fun to watch as we prepared to leave the park.

Even if a swag bag full of woolly mammoths and a picture frame made out of elephant poop is not in your future, I would highly recommend checking out the new exhibit.  When the Monterey Bay Aquarium first opened its emphasis on featuring the history and wildlife of the surrounding ecosystems was revolutionary.  The San Diego Zoo is taking a similar tact with this new exhibit.   The entrance to the exhibit teaches visitors about pre-historic San Diego.  Recently, fossilized skulls and bones of Columbian Mammoths were unearthed during a construction project in downtown San Diego.  The Elephant Odyssey  uses giant life-size statues of Columbian Mammoths and other prehistoric creatures to give visitors a sense of what San Diego life was like before humans.  These statues make for a great photo op. They can also cause a stir.  In the latest edition of Zoo Nooz, Rick Schwartz the Elephant Odyssey Ambassador noted that he got some strange looks as he escorted the models from Wisconson to San Diego.

Jenny Mehlow who works in media relations at the zoo recommends visiting the exhibit early in the day.  She also suggested riding the Skyfari Aerial Tram to get there.  I whole heartedly agree!   Here are some pictures of our own Skyfari adventure:

Thanks to my good friend Deb at San Diego Momma for securing me an invitation to this spectacular event. Check out her fun take on the VIP party entitled This Post is Made With Real Poo .  Other San Diego Mom bloggers who did great posts about the event are Tonya, Mel, and Sondra.

I am including this post, albeit belatedly,  in my friend Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday Blog Roundup.  Funny, her post this week is also about a very big creature.  Stop by and check out wonderful photgraphs and writing from around the world.

Happy Trails,

Bridget

PS Please pray for my friend Deana.  She is having trouble getting enough white blood cells to receive a potentially life saving procedure.

Family Travel Tip Tuesday: Theme Park Membership Has Its Privileges

Jared Makes A Camel Friend, Legoland California

Jared Makes A Camel Friend, Legoland California

If you are thinking about purchasing a theme park pass, be sure to investigate the extra benefits and privileges that the theme park may offer passholders.  Although these vary from park to park, many times these extras will almost pay for your entire membership.

Since my two youngest were born less than a year apart, our family has become experts at the “staycation”.  Traveling far from home with two preschoolers seems a bit too crazy for us at this point.  Our location here in Carlsbad gives us many options for family fun.  Visiting theme parks and zoos is one of the things that we enjoy doing together as a family.  In the past three years we have held passes for the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Legoland, and Disneyland.

Legoland

If you live in Southern California or visit frequently throughout the year, a Legoland membership offers many opportunities for family adventure.  In addition to the great special events and members only activities that Legoland holds throughout the year,  Legoland offers excellent deals and discounts to its members.  Twice a year, members receive coupons for free entrance with a passholder.  This gives your family opportunities to bring friends and grandparents along to enjoy a Legoland adventure.  Also, if there is a Dad or teenager in your family who won’t be making it to Legoland very often this can be a great way to bring them along to enjoy the fun.

Legoland pass holders also receive free entrance to The Wave in Vista and Wild Rivers in Irvine.  In addition to the regular member dining and shopping discounts, Legoland’s quarterly newsletters contain coupons for additional savings.  This month I have a $10 voucher for the Ocean Journey Cafe, a free bucket of water balloons at the Raptor Splash, and other discount coupons.

Members benefit from Legoland’s efforts to promote the new Sea Life Aquarium.  Legoland is continuing to offer special visitor rates to Legoland members and friends and family.  Come enjoy the aquarium for as little as $5 per person!  Note that a coupon is required.  The curent coupon says that it expires 5/31/09, but keep checking the site.  So far they have extended this offer several times.

The Unauthorized Legoland Guidebook  will help your choose the combination of  memberships that will save you money and work for your family.

Disneyland

When we were planning a three day trip to Disneyland, I decided to investigate the price of membership.  I knew that we wouldn’t be visiting too often, but since we live only an hour away a few return visits would be fun.  After doing my research I decided that the Southern California Select passes offered the best value four our budget.  Unlike Legoland, non premium Disney Passholders do not receive many benefits.  However, they do receive some limited dining discounts in the parks and shopping discounts at Downtown Disney.  Still, with prices that can be less than a multi-day visit, an annual Disneyland pass is worth considering.

San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park

Membership at these attractions is extremely affordable.  (Kids passes are only $2 more than the one day Best Value Ticket).  Adult members receive two free guest passes which come in handy for out of town guests.  Pass holders also receive free admission to the Journey into Africa Tour at the Wild Animal Park…this is a must see!   In addition, they receive unlimited Skyfari aerial tram rides at the zoo.  These are important since, kids have to do alot of walking at the San Diego Zoo.  Membership covers both attractions so your family has plenty to explore.

Members also receive a monthly zoo magazine that contains interesting articles about the animals and great coupons including more free admission tickets for passholder guests.   All pass members also receive discounts on Wild Animal Park parking.

Sea World San Diego

We have had the opportunities to obtain discounted entrance to Sea World with our preschool, so I haven’t gone the pass route yet.  I am dreaming of an  Unauthorized Sea World Guidebook some day, so we may be getting passes next summer.

In the mean time, be aware that Sea World offers the Fun Card which is a great deal.  You get a pass good for admission throughout the entire calendar year for the price of a single admission.

Parking

Make sure you factor the price of parking into your membership decisions.  Sometimes it pays to buy a more premium membership for at least one member of your family in order to get free parking.  Be sure to investigate whether the person needs to be the driver or just in the car.  Premium child memberships are often cheaper and  also offer free parking.

If you don’t live in Southern California, I encourage you to research theme park memberships in your area.  You may just discover the ticket to a whole year of family fun.

Happy Trails,

Bridget

Photo Friday: Library Adventures

Jared's Favorite Painting @ Canon Art Gallery, Carlsbad California

Lately I have had several library adventures with and without preschoolers.  At first, this may not seem like an unlikely subject for family travel.  Usually travelers with children don’t head to the library when the reach their destination, but perhaps they should.

I became one of the most voracious readers the world  has ever seen because a kind librarian in Hawaii.  When my family spent a summer sabbatical in Hawaii the year after I finished second grade, she took the time to  find interesting books at my reading level.   I don’t rember too much about snorkeling or sandy beaches from my Hawaiian getaway.  What I do remember  are cracking coconuts with my Dad and the books about Blaze the valiant horse and his young owner that I read on my own summer.

Here in Carlsbad we are blessed with two great libraries.  Year round they offer puppet shows and story times.  The Dove Library also houses a small art gallery.  In the summer there are fun special events including an overnight campout in the library , magic shows, and a visit from lots of crazy critters.  Now that the kids are old enough to enjoy it all, I plan to spend the summer playing tourist in my own town and attending some of these events.

Last week I made three very different library visits.  One day , I was able to sneak away to the library by myself.  I took the opportunity  to pop into the art gallery and take some photos .  Later that week, I joined my two preschoolers for a preschool fieldtrip which included a  guided tour of the Cole library located just east of downtown Carlsbad.  Yesterday in a moment of foolishness, I attempted to take Destiny age 5 and Jared age 4 to the Cannon Art Gallery at the Dove Library.

Considering we arrived with 20 kids, the preschool library fieldtrip was somewhat successful.  We arrived early, but the Cole library has a beautiful grassy area  that invites running around as well as picnic benches and a little garden.  Here are some fun photos of Destiny and Jared getting their energy out before settling down for the tour.

destiny-in-motionjared-in-motion

The tour was a bit challenging with that many kids, but they did surprisingly well.  One of the highlights was the Carlsbad History Room . The librarian shared a letter written by Santa at the turn of the century.  Seems at that time he delivered presents by motor car…hmm.

Cole Librarian Reads a Vintage Letter from Santa, Carlsbad California

Cole Librarian Reads a Vintage Letter from Santa, Carlsbad California

Emboldened by the success of the Library fieldtrip, I decided to stop by the Cannon Art Gallery with Destiny and Jared later in the week.  I have always been a big fan of Chicana Artist Carmen Lomas Garza.  The kids have her children’s book Family Pictures .  I knew that my preschoolers would enjoy the bright colors of  Cardinal Points:Puntos Cardinales, the exhibit of Mexican and Chicano art on display at the Dove Library until May 8th.  Well they did enjoy it…way too much!  They loved the paintings so much that they wanted to touch them, much to my chagrin and that of the gallery employee who shadowed us throughout our visit.  They  were so enthralled by each work of art that they rushed from painting to painting.    With one child I might have made it work.  With two wiggly preschoolers, I gave up after a short visit.  I have read that other  travel bloggers prep their kids by role playing art gallery at home.  We may give that a try before our next museum outing.

Off to Seattle on business next week, so you may not hear from me for a while, dear readers.  Until then enjoy a few more beautiful works of art and be sure to check out Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday http://tinyurl.com/dxmpjo when you have a chance.

Carlsbad Flower Fields in Bloom, Spring 2009

Carlsbad Flower Fields in Bloom, Spring 2009

I am exhausted.  It has been a very busy week playing tourist with our friends from Watsonville.  Adventures with 5-6 kids are a little harder than with just three.  Still, we’ve had lots of fun, and I have plenty to blog about when I catch my breath.

In the mean time, I hope that if you live here in Southern California, these pictures will inspire you to visit the Carlsbad Flower fields.  I get to drive by these beauties several days a week.

The admission is affordable.  Keep your eye out for coupons or bring your AAA card.  While you’re there pick up some discount coupons for Legoland (Free Child admission with paid adult)

There is a fun playground for the kids and a sweet pea maze.  The Poinsettia collection is fascinating  with numerous varieties of this symbol of Carlsbad. The fields themselves are breathtaking.  You can enjoy them by tractor or on foot.  If you go, you are in for a treat.  Stop by soon. The season is very short.

In honor of my friend Delicious Baby’s trip to Legoland, I decided to publish some of my favorite Legoland pictures.  One thing that makes Legoland, California such a great themepark are the giant Lego creations that you find around every turn.  Something about them makes my usually reticient kids want to strike a pose!  Best of all, you usually don’t have to wait in line to take your picture as you do with Disneyland Characters.  (Thomas the Tank Engine, Darth Vader, and Santa’s Sleigh are the exceptions to this statement).

Taking Your Preschooler Iceskating + Free Skating Lessions…Such a Deal!

March 30th, 2009 by bsmith | 1 Comment | Filed in San Diego Day Trips, Scouting
Jared and Mom Teeter Along at the Escondido Iceoplex

Jared and Mom Teeter Along at the Escondido Iceoplex

As I have said before Cub Scouts provides great opportunities for family adventure.  A few weeks ago, my four year old,  Jared and I had the chance to accompany big brother Justin to a Pack Iceskating event at the Escondido Iceoplex.   I must admit I didn’t think I could juggle two preschoolers on the ice so Destiny stayed home and had quality time with Dad.

Admission was superaffordable due to the cub scout connection…Justin was free and Jared and I paid $5 per person for admission.  Skate rental was included for all of us.  I paid an additional $3 for a little walker to keep Jared steady on the ice :) .  Needless to say it was worth every penny and helped keep me steady as well.  I was able to push Jared around around the ice without falling down once.

Iceskating with preschoolers requires alot of patience, and some outside support where possible.  Some of my den parents helped me get Jared’s skates on.  He didn’t quite get the concept of maneuvering his foot into the skate.  My friend Karen was kind enough to capture the event with still shots and video using my camera.

Jared slipped, slidded, and fell down alot, but he always got up ready to go some more.  He insisted on heading to the center of the rink.  I was glad for the PVC walker, since I usually don’t venture into that territory when I am on my own.  My main problem was that he kept stopping to lick the ice…yuck!  Here’s the video.

Jared and Mommy’s Iceoplex Adventure

You don’t have to be a cubscout to enjoy a great bargain at the Iceoplex.  Every Thursday from 5:30-6pm this April they are offering free skate lessons…yes you heard it free!  This includes free skate rental and admission to public skate time on the day of the lesson.  I really wish we could join and take advantage of this great San Diego Bargain, but we are going to be out of town the second week in April.  Check it out for me and let me know how it is!  To sign up contact the skating director at 760-489-5550 ex 303 or Lexie@iceoplex.com.

Ready to Steal Some of the Sea Lion's Fish @ Seaworld California

Ready to Steal Some of the Sea Lions' Fish @ Seaworld California

I have seen birds like this at our local lagoon, but never one this close.  Seaworld is very close to the San Diego Bay.  I like to think that this little guy was just flying by and stopped in for a snack!

This photo was taken at the Pacific Point exhibit at Sea World.  Our friends had fun feeding the Sea Lions and California Harbor Seals.  Pacific Point is one of three animal feeding opportunities at Sea World.  You can also feed dolphins and manta rays depending on the day.   (My kids had a change to feed the rays, but didn’t enjoy the slimy feeling of the squid!)

Make sure you bring cash. I found out the hard way that  the feeding booths do not take credit cards.  This is one of the few actitivities that is worth spending extra money at a theme park.  Make sure you check the schedule for feeding times!

Photo Friday: Nana and Baba’s Anza-Borrego Adventure

Nana and Baba Among the Wild Flowers at Anza-Borrego

Nana and Baba Among the Wild Flowers at Anza-Borrego

My kids are very lucky in that most of their Grandmas and Grandpas live near by.  My parents, affectionately referred to by the grand kids as Nana and Baba recently joined us in Carlsbad.  Even though my mom had been a Northern California girl all her live she has become acclimated some what to Southern California life.  Since they are retired they have the chance to take a break from watching grandkids and enjoy their own grown up adventures.  They fill me in on the beautiful places that I can not necessarily visit with small children, like the gardens at the Self-Realization Temple in Encinitas.  (My brood is apparently too loud for such a quiet, meditative locale.)   I’m keeping a list though.   As soon has these wild ones are tamed, we will be heading off on some of these great adventures.

Last week, Nana and Baba’s friend Karen took them to Anza-Borrego State Park.  Every March visitors are rewarded with a brief season of blooming wild flowers.  The rains were plentiful this winter and wildflowers continue to bloom in this area of the desert.   The location of the flowers is ever changing, however.  Check the Anza Borrego website for an up to date wildflower report http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=638.  The visitor center which is staffed by local volunteers is also supposed to be very helpful, but also very busy during wild flower season.

I Loved the Colors on this Big Fat Caterpillar

I Loved the Colors on this Big Fat Caterpillar

Nana and Baba had a few set backs along the way.  At first the flowers were no where to be seen.  They were ready to head home when my Dad noted a few cars turning up a road.  They followed the road to the end and were  rewarded by a burst of color.   Karen’s favorite restaurant was booked solid, but they consulted with a local realtor and had an elegant lunch at a restaurant next to a golf course.  Just goes to show that a good adventure requires patience and creativity.

Flower season is almost over, so we may need to wait another year to try this adventure.  If you are free this weekend, the website reports that there are still some beautiful flowers tucked in the valleys.  If you have big kids who don’t mind the drive, it might still be worth the drive. Don’t delay, the flowers will be gone before you know it.

BREAKING NEWS!  Now we all have one more reason to take a family adventure to Anza-Borrego.  Dennis Avery, of the Avery label family has erected gigantic Ricardo Breceda sculptures of dinosaurs and other early inhabitants of the desert on his property.  Now that is art even my nine year old, Justin can appreciate!   Thanks to San Diego Travel Tips http://www.sandiegotraveltips.com/ for alerting me to this fun family adventure opportunity.  If you are ready to explore the quirky side of San Diego…these ladies have some excellent suggestions.  Sign up today!

The flowers in these pictures were so beautiful I just had to share them with you.  If you want to enjoy a multitude of beautiful travel photos, head over to my friend Delicious Baby’s website today at http://www.deliciousbaby.com/journal/2009/mar/19/photo-friday-push-boats-luxembourg-gardens/.  She is highlighting a fun Paris tradition and also features links to a number of beautiful travel photos from all over the world.

Destiny, Jared, and Justin Climb the Steps at the Lavandaria at Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside California

I have a lovely blog entry in my head about a weekend pilgrimage that Justin and I did right before Lent here in San Diego.  Now is not the time to write it however!  In the mean time enjoy this picture of the beautiful lavandaria (laundry area) at the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside California.  I really enjoyed visiting this mission.  It had a great little museum, beautiful church, and this fun outside area to explore.  Justin particularly enjoyed the gargoyles and we had fun trying to figure out why the water spouts had these Incan looking gargoyles at a Catholic Mission.  If anyone has the answer let me know.

Since this is one of my more aesthetically pleasing pictures, I am entering in in my friend Debbie’s Photo Friday Roundup at Delicious Baby.  If you want to see travel photos by bloggers more skillful than I, please check it out at http://www.deliciousbaby.com/journal/2009/mar/12/photo-friday-home-food-rome/ .
