It was Day 8 of our Santa Cruz adventure. Due to circumstances mostly beyond my control I needed a place to eat dinner at 6:45 pm. The kids were cranky and exhausted. My husband was out eating with friends. I was desperately seeking a place that was so entertaining that the little ones would behave themselves well enough that we wouldn’t be kicked out!
I found my oasis in the town of Capitola, California. I headed to the Train Place Deli hoping that the mesmorizing sight of model trains would calm my rowdy crew. Well, as you can see from the pictures below, the kids were still pretty rowdy, but the gracious service and fascinating trains did put everyone in a better mood.

Tired, but Happy at the Train Place Deli
The hardworking owners of the Train Place Deli welcomed us fifteen minutes before closing, patiently took my children’s order, (A five year old can be pretty undecided at 7pm), and even treated us to some extra cookies. My Italian Special was delicious and included: a huge salami sandwich, pasta salad, and a drink. Each kids meal came with a big cookie which made everyone happy.

Hi Bridget! Looks like you guys are having a great time – can’t beat trains coupled with people who are patient with serving families! I also just updated my Photo Friday blog post this week to include a link to your State Park Sunday series. Travel well!
Wow what a great idea for a deli. I love these kinds of places.
I’m going to have to look for this place next time I’m in Capitola, sounds great for my little train-loving guy.
My son will so love this place. He might actually eat all his food for once if we go there.
What a cool restaurant.
Yummy! and fun. what else can you ask for. My son would have raided the trains some how or other.
Pastrami with trains, what more do you need. Sounds like a great place.
Trains and kids certainly are a good combo. We live behind a park where a narrow gauge railroad group has tracks and runs trains, giving free rides to everyone who shows up during specified warm weather weekends. Big draw for families, and the kids seem fascinated by the little trains.
No surprise, then, that this deli was a big hit with your family
So cool that you lucked into finding this place! My son would think he was in heaven!
the train place deli closed its doors last tues, july 21st…so sad
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
